Printland : An exhibition bringing together some of the UK's leading printmakers

October 26 - November 23, 2024

This autumn we are proud to present our second Printland exhibition, bringing together some of the UK's leading printmakers. Showing together for the first time, 'Printland' will showcase works by

Paul Catherall RE

Merlyn Chesterman RE

Paul Cleden

Andy Lovell

Robin Mackenzie

Colin Moore

Penfold Press

Lisa Takahashi

Each of the artists included in this exhibition has developed their own distinct visual language that they use to interpret their world. The show will include a wide array of subject matter, including paired down depictions of Brutalist architecture, busy urban street scenes, and wild seas ebbing and flowing on the south coast.

At the heart of the work produced by each of these artists is a passion for working from direct observation and distilling images into overlapping shapes, colours and textures that bring a sense of the poetic to their work. Between them they have an impressive array of private collectors and have received commissions from clients including Transport for London, the National Portrait Gallery and Faber and Faber.

Exhibiting Artists

Paul Catherall RE is a London based illustrator and printmaker, best known for his bold linocuts of architectural landmarks. Clients include Transport for London, The Southbank Centre, The House of Commons and The Royal Shakespeare Company.

Merlyn Chesterman RE's woodcuts celebrate the movement and textures seen over land and sea. She also makes collaborative prints with Judith Wescott and Ian Phillips under the name Pine Feroda. She recently published her second book with Rod Nelson, Twenty Concepts In Woodblock Printing.

Paul Cleden is a Dorset based linocut printmaker who uses his medium to depict figurative movement, such as sporting scenes and commuters, with an aesthetic that nods affectionately to early twentieth century design. Clients include the National Trust, Bloomsbury and the RSPB.

Andy Lovell creates vibrant and painterly screenprints of rural landscape, celebrating its ruggedness and dramatic light effects. Andy exhibits his work extensively and is in the Palace of Westminster Collection, London. Clients include Random House and Harper Collins.

Robin Mackenzie's wood engravings and linocuts capture the changing weather and light on landscape.Using a cast iron Hopkinson & Cope Albion Press manufactured in 1854, Robin crafts his prints with care and a perfectionists eye for detail. In 2016 he was elected as a Member of The Society of Wood Engravers and in 2017 as a Member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen.

Colin Moore makes prints using a multi-block linocut technique. The work is mostly British landscape, often coastal subjects. In recent years Colin has carried out a number of public mural commissions, notably for Guy's Hospital in London, the new Hilton Hotel in Bournemouth, and SAGA.

The Penfold Press was established by Dan Bugg in 2005 and has gone on to work regularly with a small group of creative talents to produce beautiful editioned prints that are sought-after by collectors and art lovers alike, including Clare Curtis, Paul Cleden and Mark Hearld.

Lisa Takahashi works with linocut and collagraphic processes to create colourful and highly textured images of both rural and urban landscape. She has exhibited four times at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and this year was shortlisted for the RBSA Print Prize.
