"I love using different materials to bring a subject to life. I find that pastel paper has the perfect texture, weight, and feel for feathers. Each feather is individually hand-cut, painted, and layered, in a technique I like to call the 'paper patina'."

Jamie has always enjoyed working with paper as a creative medium, particularly when crafting feathers.

Before beginning a bird sculpture, he researches the species in detail, studying its size, proportions, colours, textures, and feather shapes to determine the appropriate paper colours.

The process starts with sculpting the bird in wax-based clay, focusing on capturing movement, form, and expression. Each piece is intended to tell a story from the perspective of the animal itself.

A silicone rubber mould is then made from the original sculpture, allowing the form to be cast in resin as the base onto which the feathers will be applied.

Most feathers are painted before being applied to avoid clogging the delicate frayed edges and layered textures. Once prepared, each feather is individually cut and glued onto the body, starting at the tail and working upward to the head with carefully overlapping layers.
