This autumn we are thrilled to be presenting our third PRINTLAND exhibition, bringing together leading printmakers from around the UK, exhibiting Fellows of the Royal Society of Printmakers (RE), elected members of the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) and Academicians.
PRINTLAND exhibits professional printmakers across all disciplines who have developed a distinct visual language through which they interpret the world around them. Depicting a wide range of subject matter from the vast ebb and flow of tides and the openness of wild coastlines to the minutiae of fine lines of insect eggs on a flower bud - alongside action-packed sports.
At the heart of each practice is a commitment to direct observation and to distilling form into layered shapes, colour and texture, creating works that balance structure with a strong sense of atmosphere and poetry.
Collectively, the artists have built significant followings among private collectors and have commissions, collaborations and illustrative and literary awards including English Heritage, Hepworth Wakefield, Liberty, National Trust, Penguin, RSPB, Saga Cruises, Weatherspoons and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Invited Artists
Laura Boswell, Neil Bousfield, Paul Cleden, Clare Curtis, Blaze Cyan, Melvyn Evans, Angie Lewin, Robin Mackenzie, Penfold Press and Lisa Takahashi.
Laura Boswell
is a printmaker based on the west coast of Scotland whose work explores space, light and atmosphere in wild coastal landscapes. Inspired by changing weather and the meeting of sea and land, her prints focus on the feeling of place rather than direct representation.
Working in reduction linocut, she builds layered images from a single block, gradually cut away through the process. Her work is influenced by Japanese aesthetics, particularly yohaku no bi - the beauty of empty space - balancing detailed mark-making with areas of openness and stillness.
Neil Bousfield
is a British relief printmaker, whose work explores the fragile relationship between land and sea. His engravings address coastal erosion, rising sea levels and climate change, extending observations of low-lying landscapes to vulnerable shorelines worldwide. Working in multi-layered relief printmaking, he creates atmospheric, technically innovative images with a strong environmental focus.
Paul Cleden
is a printmaker whose work focuses on figurative movement and dynamic human activity. Sports, crowded public spaces, markets and social gatherings provide recurring inspiration, offering opportunities to explore rhythm, energy and composition.Working primarily in linocut, he uses flowing line and layered, overlapping colour to express movement and intensity within everyday scenes.
Clare Curtis
mainly works in lino cut but also produces lithographs and screen prints, her work reflecting a love of British 20th century art and design with plants and garden forms finding their way into her work. Whilst exhibiting prints around the UK she uses illustrative skills to work with individuals sharing her enthusiasm for printing, illustration and design.
Blaze Cyan
work explores the beauty and enduring presence of trees through drawing, etching, painting and wood engraving. Rooted in an interest in landscape ecology the work reflects a close attention to the natural world and invites viewers to look more carefully at their surroundings. Trees not only shape the landscape, but also offer a sense of calm, continuity and connection to something older and more enduring.
Melvyn Evans
work explores landscape, folklore and allegory within the British countryside, balancing figurative and abstract forms. Influenced by ideas of prehistory, place and memory, he has developed a bold visual language shaped by British modernism and the St Ives School.
Angie Lewin
is a printmaker and designer whose work is inspired by the coastal landscapes of North Norfolk coast and the Scottish Highlands. Working across wood engraving, linocut, lithography and collage, she explores the forms, textures and seasonal rhythms of native plants and landscapes through closely observed botanical detail.
Robin Mackenzie
is an illustrator and printmaker specialising in linocut and wood engraving, notably creating the wood blocks for the documentary Eric Ravilious: Drawn to War. Working from his studio in Dorset using a traditional Albion Press, his work explores the British coast and landscape.
Penfold Press - Dan Bugg
As a professional printmaker he shifted towards collaborative practice, co-founding Penfold Press in 2005. Working with emerging artists, he specialises in relief and screen printing, developing ideas through experimentation and problem-solving. He has co-published more than 150 editions and collaborated with institutions including Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Hepworth Wakefield. Exhibitors include Mark Hearld, Jonny Hannah, Clive Hicks-Jenkins, John Broadley, Emily Sutton and Angela Harding.
Lisa Takahashi
is a Somerset-based artist working across linocut, oil painting and watercolour. She is best known for her bold, geometric linocut prints of cyclists, alongside expressive figurative paintings influenced by British Modernism and French Impressionism. She is a semi-finalist of Landscape Artist of the Year, Channel 5 Watercolour Challenge judge, journalist, advisor and teacher.
