The crane has fascinated me for many years, not only for its elegance and grace, but also for the rich symbolism it has carried across cultures for thousands of years. In creating Dancing Cranes, I was inspired by both the bird itself and the striking form of the Strelitzia, or crane flower, whose sculptural silhouette influenced the flowing lines of the composition.
Cranes have appeared in art and mythology since ancient Egypt, where they were depicted in temple reliefs and tombs, and in ancient Greece they were associated with Apollo, Hermes and Hephaestus, the god of sculptors. Yet it is in China that the crane has become the enduring 'bird of happiness', symbolising liberation from earthly constraints, the unshakeable unity of two people and everlasting joy. In Taoism and Buddhism, the crane is revered as a sacred messenger between the earthly and the spiritual, embodying immortality and transcendence. It is no coincidence that the traditional birthday wish in China, Japan and Korea is, "May your life be as long and happy as that of a crane."
With Dancing Cranes, I wanted to capture more than the beauty of the birds' movement. Their graceful courtship dance speaks of harmony, devotion and companionship, qualities that have resonated throughout history. By reducing their forms to elegant, flowing curves, I hope to create a sculpture that celebrates not only the timeless beauty of the crane, but also the universal human desire for love, happiness and enduring connection.
