Stephen Bithell

"I realise I have two Studios, one is the one that springs to most people as an Artist's garret, four walls with stuff. Then there is Nature's Studio, Pleinair. Pallington Lakes is a very special Studio. A very special light. If I were told I could only paint here, I would not be unhappy."

I can relate to Edward Hopper when he said "if I could say it in words, there'd be no reason to paint"...

On finishing art school in the mid 1980's Stephen Bithell started a journey of developing a vocabulary of drawing and painting, through line and colour.

Stephen can be found here at Sculpture by the Lakes from season to season, where he paints en plein air,    He has the fantastic ability to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, working in oils, and more recently watercolour.

Bithell has works in private collections across the UK and around the world.
